Woodingdean – did you know?
- Woodingdean is an eastern suburb of Brighton and Hove, separated from the main city by open downland and Brighton Racecourse.
- Interestingly, the name Woodingdean comes from “Woodendean” (wooded valley) Farm, which was originally situated at the southern end of what is now Ovingdean.
- Woodingdean is home to the deepest hand-dug well in the world — the Woodingdean Water Well, excavated between 1858 and 1862 to a depth of 1,285 feet (392 metres).
- Notably, the well was dug to provide water for a workhouse school, and the site of that school is now occupied by the Nuffield Hospital on Warren Road.
- The area began to develop after the First World War, when plots of former South Downs sheep-farming land were sold to returning soldiers as smallholdings and poultry farms.
- What’s more, Woodingdean was once locally notorious for its “plotlands” — makeshift shacks and homes built from wooden huts and even railway carriage bodies during the 1920s.
