Peacehaven – did you know?
- Peacehaven is the place where the Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) crosses the English south coast. The Meridian Monument on the cliff top marks this exact spot and is one of the town’s most distinctive landmarks.
- Interestingly, Peacehaven was founded in 1916 by entrepreneur Charles Neville, who bought land in the parish of Piddinghoe and ran a nationwide newspaper competition to name the development. The winning name was “New Anzac-on-Sea” in honour of the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli, but it was renamed Peacehaven in 1917.
- The town was part of the plotlands movement — working-class families from London bought cheap plots of land and built makeshift homes from railway carriages and former army huts. Some of these original hut buildings still survive today, disguised behind modern concrete block walls.
- Notably, the Daily Express sued Charles Neville over the naming competition, arguing it was a scam because the runner-up “free” plots required payment of a conveyancing fee. The Express won the case, but the resulting publicity brought even more buyers to the scheme.
- A Bronze Age barrow (burial mound) near the cliff top is evidence of human occupation at Peacehaven at least 3,500 years ago. A 2007 excavation also unearthed a prehistoric settlement dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
- What’s more, the famous singer and comedienne Gracie Fields set up the Gracie Fields Children’s Home and Orphanage in Peacehaven in 1933 for children of theatre professionals who could not look after them. She kept it running until 1967.
- Peacehaven’s grid layout was inspired by American city planning. Roads run east to west and Avenues run north to south, forming an unusual crosshatch pattern that distinguishes the town from other Sussex coastal settlements.
- Finally, the town sits atop chalk cliffs about 40–50 metres above sea level, with a pebble beach accessible by stairs and a concrete sea walk. The cliffs are part of the South Downs National Park.
- Interestingly, Peacehaven was originally advertised as a seaside resort and retirement destination for World War I veterans, with the sea air and simple lifestyle promoted as being beneficial to health.
- Notably, after World War II, the local council introduced a zoning scheme to manage development along the coast road, and the 1974 Town Centre Map and Action Plan helped shape the town’s modern layout, including the Meridian Shopping Centre.
