When it comes to local driving conditions, Northwood means navigating a unique blend of leafy suburban London and fast Hertfordshire border roads in a town that straddles Greater London and Hertfordshire. The area is served by the Metropolitan line (Northwood and Northwood Hills stations on the Watford branch) and sits 141⁄2 miles northwest of Charing Cross. Driving here means tackling the busy A404 Rickmansworth Road and Pinner Road corridors with heavy commuter traffic during peak hours, multiple roundabouts, and constant pedestrian crossings near the Metropolitan line stations. You’ll also face the particular challenge of the M25 at junction 17 (Maple Cross) just north of town, plus the A40 Western Avenue corridor for those heading into central London. The undulating terrain — elevations range from 54m to 114m — creates a surprising number of steep inclines and blind crests on residential roads around Copse Wood Way and Green Lane. Meanwhile, Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve and the numerous golf courses in the area bring frequent encounters with slow-moving traffic, wildlife warnings, and narrow wooded lanes. Northwood’s elevated position and open spaces attracted three hospitals to the area, including the major Mount Vernon Hospital, adding ambulance traffic and restricted parking zones to the mix. Whether you’re searching for driving schools in Northwood or comparing local driving instructors in Northwood, the instructors here know the local test routes inside out.

Northwood – did you know?

  • Northwood was first recorded in 1435 as Northwode, formed from the Old English “north” and “wode” meaning “the northern wood”, in relation to Ruislip and its extensive ancient woodlands.
  • Interestingly, the Domesday Book of 1086 records that the parish of Ruislip (which then encompassed Northwood) had immense woodland sufficient to support 1,500 pigs per year, plus a “park for wild beasts” — parcus ferarum in the original Latin.
  • The area was used as the location for filming the Goods’ and Leadbetters’ houses and surrounding streets in the BBC TV sitcom The Good Life (1975), standing in for the fictional Surbiton — a piece of television history that Northwood residents still take pride in.
  • Notably, Northwood Headquarters at Eastbury Park is the location of the British Armed Forces Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) for planning and controlling overseas military operations, co-located with NATO Maritime Command — making it one of the most strategically important military sites in the UK.
  • Northwood was listed as the UK’s most expensive place to buy property due to its suburban setting and excellent transport links to Central London via the Metropolitan line, with direct trains to Baker Street in around 35 minutes.
  • What’s more, the Metropolitan Railway extension from Harrow-on-the-Hill to Rickmansworth in 1887 sparked Northwood’s transformation from a tiny hamlet of just 41 people (1841) to a thriving suburb — Northwood station opened in August 1887 and the population soared to 2,500 by 1902.
  • On 4 July 1948, a Scandinavian Airlines Douglas DC-6 on a flight from Amsterdam to RAF Northolt collided with an RAF Avro York over Northwood, tragically killing all 39 people on both aircraft — one of the worst aviation disasters in British history at the time.
  • Finally, the town is home to 22 listed buildings and a triangular conservation area including the Old High Street, Chester Road and Hallowell Road, designated a place of Local Architectural Special Interest for its ornate Victorian brickwork.
  • Interestingly, David Carnegie sold the Eastbury Park Estate to developer Frank Carew in 1887 for £59,422 (around £7 million today), with Carew’s first cottages on the High Street priced at just £120 — a fraction of today’s property prices in this famously affluent area.
  • Notably, Northwood’s three major hospitals — Mount Vernon Hospital, St. Vincent’s Orthopaedic Hospital, and Northwood and Pinner Cottage Hospital — were drawn to the area by its elevated position, clean air and open spaces, making it a centre for healthcare since the late 19th century.
