Pontardawe – did you know?
- Pontardawe is a town in the lower Swansea Valley (Cwmtawe), part of the Neath Port Talbot county borough, with a population of approximately 7,172 (2021 census).
- Interestingly, the name Pontardawe translates directly from Welsh as “bridge on the Tawe”, and first appears on a map in 1729 as “Pont-ar-Dawye” in Emanuel Bowen’s New and Accurate Map of South Wales.
- The best-known landmark is the tall spire of St Peter’s Church, which has French-style architecture, was financed by industrialist William Parsons, and was completed in 1862.
- Notably, the old stone bridge of Pontardawe was built by William Edwards of Eglwsilan, who also built the famous Old Bridge at Pontypridd — the longest single-span bridge in the world when constructed.
- The Swansea Canal connected Pontardawe with Swansea Docks by 1796, enabling the industrial development that began with the Ynysderw ironworks in 1835.
- What’s more, the Gilbertson family were the most important proprietors in the town for 90 years from 1861, manufacturing iron, steel and tinplate that was exported worldwide.
- From 1861 until 1964, a railway line connected Pontardawe with the rest of the valley, carrying through carriages between Swansea and Brecon, Hereford, Malvern, Worcester and Birmingham.
- Finally, the Pontardawe Festival was held every August from 1978, featuring singing, dancing and artistic performances from around the world on the leisure centre playing-fields.
- Interestingly, notable people from Pontardawe include folk singer Mary Hopkin (“Those Were the Days”), poet and scholar D. Gwenallt Jones, and novelist Stan Barstow.
- Notably, the town includes two sections of the Swansea Canal with a total length of 2.5 miles, and National Cycle Route 43 from Swansea to Builth Wells passes through the recreation ground.
