- Interestingly, the name derives from the Old English word giete or gete, meaning a gateway into a forest area.
- Yate is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and a religious house existed here as early as AD 770.
- Notably, the parish church of St Mary’s dates from Norman times, with 15th-century alterations and a major restoration in 1970.
- Yate grew significantly from the 1950s onwards, transforming from a small village into a modern town with a population of over 23,700.
- What’s more, the opening of Yate railway station in 1844 as part of the Bristol and Gloucester Railway was key to the town’s development.
- Yate railway station was closed by the Beeching cuts in 1965 but reopened in May 1989, and the Brunel-built engine shed is preserved nearby.
- Finally, major growth began in the 1920s with the Moorland Road estates, built near the Parnall aircraft factory which employed many local workers.
- Interestingly, Yate is contiguous with the market town of Chipping Sodbury, and together they form a built-up area of around 35,000 people.
