Rotherham – did you know?

  • Rotherham is a market town in South Yorkshire at the confluence of the River Rother and the River Don, with a name derived from the Brittonic words for “chief river” — the same root as the River Rother in East Sussex.
  • Interestingly, in the 1480s, Rotherham-born Archbishop of York Thomas Rotherham founded the College of Jesus in the town — the first brick building in what is now South Yorkshire, rivaling the colleges of Cambridge and Oxford.
  • The Rotherham-born Archbishop’s college was dissolved in 1547 under Edward VI, and very little remains of the original building except for a doorway rescued from demolition and relocated to Boston Park in 1879.
  • Notably, Rotherham was a major centre of the Industrial Revolution — its coal mines and steelworks, including the famous Steel, Peech and Tozer plant, powered South Yorkshire’s economy for over 150 years.
  • Mary, Queen of Scots stayed in Rotherham for two nights at the end of January 1569 while being moved between secure locations by her English captors, and is thought to have stayed in the former College building.
  • What’s more, Rotherham has a magnificent medieval parish church — All Saints Church, which was elevated to the status of Rotherham Minster in 2004, recognising its outstanding architectural and historical significance.
  • The town is home to the Rotherham Bridge Chapel (Chapel of Our Lady of Rotherham Bridge), one of only four surviving medieval bridge chapels in England, built around 1485 and situated on the medieval bridge over the Don.
  • Finally, Rotherham’s history includes the tragic “Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal” which came to light in the early 2010s, leading to major national reforms in child protection services and several highly publicised public inquiries.
  • Interestingly, the town’s most famous sport is football — Rotherham United FC, nicknamed “The Millers”, plays at the New York Stadium, a modern 12,000-capacity ground opened in 2012 on the site of a former steelworks.
  • Notably, Rotherham emerged from the decline of heavy industry in the late 20th century and the borough’s population was estimated at 276,595 in 2024, making it the 64th most populous district in England.
