Roade – did you know?
- Roade is a village and civil parish in Northamptonshire with a population of 2,312 at the 2011 census, located roughly 66 miles north of London.
- Interestingly, its name derives from the Old English word for “clearing,” suggesting the village was originally a settlement carved out of woodland.
- Roade has a long medieval history dating back as far as 1066, when it was recorded in the Domesday Book.
- Notably, the village is bisected by a deep railway cutting carrying four tracks of the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to Manchester and Scotland — the cutting is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
- The West Coast Main Line through Roade dates from 1838 and was electrified in the 1960s, with the cutting separating the older eastern part of the village from the more recent western development.
- What’s more, Roade had its own railway station at the southern end of the village, but it closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts; campaigns in the 1990s to reopen it for commuter services were unsuccessful.
- Roade straddles the busy A508 between Northampton and Milton Keynes, just 2 miles south of junction 15 of the M1 motorway.
- Finally, an accident occurred at the northern end of Roade Cutting on 31 December 1969 when a northbound goods train on the slow lines derailed, with a southbound passenger train from Nottingham subsequently colliding with the wreckage.
- Interestingly, the four railway lines split at the north end of the cutting, with the two “slow” lines forming the Northampton loop via Northampton and Long Buckby, while the “fast” lines head directly north via Rugby.
- Notably, Roade was historically in the South Northamptonshire district, but following local government reorganisation in 2021 it became part of the West Northamptonshire unitary authority.
