When it comes to local driving conditions, Ramsey means navigating the flat, open fenland roads of Huntingdonshire in Cambridgeshire. The town lies about 9 miles north of Huntingdon on the edge of the Fens, and drivers will encounter long, straight Fenland roads with wide drainage ditches on either side — conditions that demand concentration as visibility can be deceptive on seemingly straight stretches. The town’s most distinctive feature, the Great Whyte, is an unusually wide main street that was originally a navigable canal, later culverted in 1854. Narrower roads lead out to the satellite hamlets of Ramsey Forty Foot, Ramsey Heights, Ramsey Mereside and Ramsey St Mary’s. During harvest season, agricultural traffic — tractors, combines and grain trailers — is a common feature on the roads. Whether you’re searching for driving schools in Ramsey or comparing local driving instructors in Ramsey, the instructors here know the local test routes and the unique Fenland driving conditions inside out.

Ramsey – did you know?

  • Ramsey is a market town and civil parish in the Huntingdonshire district of Cambridgeshire, about 9 miles north of Huntingdon, with a population of 8,479 at the 2011 Census.
  • Interestingly, the name Ramsey derives from the Old English ‘hramsaēg’, meaning ‘wild garlic island’, reflecting its fenland island setting.
  • The town grew up around Ramsey Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in the 10th century that was, in Parliamentary precedence, the third most important abbey in England after Glastonbury and St Albans.
  • Notably, the Great Whyte was originally a navigable fenland canal that ran along what is now the town’s wide main street, eventually culverted with a brick tunnel in 1854.
  • Ramsey Abbey was dissolved in 1537, and the Crown granted the site to Richard Williams (alias Cromwell), who demolished the buildings and sold the materials.
  • What’s more, a fire at Little Whyte in 1636 destroyed some 15 tenements, and a second devastating fire in 1731 destroyed a great part of the High Street.
  • The remains of Ramsey Abbey are now home to part of Abbey College, the town’s secondary school, which was formed from the amalgamation of Ailwyn School and Ramsey Abbey School.
  • The town manor is built on the site of the ancient Abbey, using materials from it, and is the seat of the Lords de Ramsey, major landowners in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire.
  • Interestingly, Ramsey has several satellite settlements including Ramsey Forty Foot, Ramsey Heights, Ramsey Mereside, Ramsey Hollow and Ramsey St Mary’s, each with its own character.
  • Notably, in 1774 Lord Orford visited Ramsey during his famous voyage around the Fens, documenting the town and its waterways in his travel writings.
