Peaslake – did you know?

  • Peaslake is a small village within the civil parish of Shere, sitting in the heart of the Surrey Hills National Landscape.
  • Interestingly, the earliest mention of Peaslake dates to 1784, when farm labourer Francis Haybile left a rentcharge to provide bread for the poor.
  • The village was largely inaccessible by wheeled vehicles until the 1890s, when the first proper road was built from Ewhurst following the Local Government Act 1894.
  • Notably, most of the oldest houses in Peaslake were built during the brief Edwardian period (1901–1911), giving the village much of its character.
  • Peaslake School was founded in 1870 by George Cubitt (1st Lord Ashcombe), Mr Justice Bray and the Misses Spottiswoode.
  • What’s more, the Hurtwood surrounding the village covers 3,000 acres of common land and includes Holmbury Hill, Pitch Hill and Winterfold.
  • Pitch Hill, which rises to 257 metres, is the fifth-highest point in Surrey and offers panoramic views across the Weald.
  • Holmbury Hill, just 1 mile east of Pitch Hill, features a Bronze Age multivallate hill fort with an elevation of 261 metres.
  • Interestingly, the writer Ralph Lawrence recalled hearing the guns of the Western Front while walking in the Hurtwood during the First World War.
  • Notably, Peaslake’s population was just 878 at the 2011 census, but the village retains a pub, a village hall and a church serving its scattered community.
