When it comes to local driving conditions, Hoylake means navigating a seaside town on the north-western tip of the Wirral Peninsula where the River Dee meets the Irish Sea. The town’s coastal location brings strong crosswinds, narrow lanes near the promenade, and busy summer traffic around the Royal Liverpool Golf Club during Open Championship years. Residential streets in Hoose and around Market Street feature tight parking and one-way systems, while the approach roads such as Meols Drive and the A553 can become congested during school runs and tourist seasons. Hoylake – did you know?

  • Hoylake takes its name from ‘Hoyle Lake’, a channel of water between Hilbre Island and Dove Point that provided safe anchorage for ships too large to sail up the Dee to Chester.
  • Interestingly, King William III set sail from Hoylake in 1690 with a 10,000-strong army bound for Ireland and the Battle of the Boyne; the departure point is still called King’s Gap today.
  • Hoylake is home to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, founded in 1869 — the second oldest golf links in England — which has hosted the Open Championship thirteen times, most recently in 2023 when Brian Harman won the Claret Jug.
  • Notably, the Hoylake and West Kirby War Memorial was designed in 1922 by Charles Sargeant Jagger, the sculptor responsible for the Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in London.
  • The town’s old upper lighthouse, an octagonal brick tower built in 1764 and rebuilt in 1865, still stands on Valentia Road as a private residence and is a Grade II listed building.
  • What’s more, a lower lighthouse closer to the shore in Alderley Road was demolished in 1922; the two lighthouses originally worked as a pair, with the lower one movable to align with shifting sands and tides.
  • Hoylake grew from the small fishing village of Hoose (meaning ‘hollows’), which was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as part of the Wirral Hundred of Cheshire.
  • The former Hoylake Town Hall on Market Street is being converted into a new arts centre called The Beacon, featuring craft workshops, a restaurant, and apartments.
  • Interestingly, the town supports one of the oldest lifeboat stations in the country, founded in 1803 by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board and now operated by the RNLI with a modern all-weather lifeboat.
  • Notably, Hoylake-born amateur golfer John Ball Jnr. won The Open in 1890, becoming the first Englishman and first amateur to claim the title.
