Weekly News: 2026 DVSA driving test booking rules—plan with fewer changes

DVSA driving test booking rules: what changed in 2026

This week’s DVSA update explains the 2026 driving test booking rules: fewer changes, who can manage a test, and how learners move centres—so you can plan with confidence.

1) You only get 2 changes (with a reset if DVSA changes your test)

From 31 March 2026, the number of changes you can make to an existing car driving test appointment is limited to two. If DVSA needs to change your test (for example due to bad weather), you’re reset back to having 2 changes available again.

2) Learners must manage their own booking

Since 12 May 2026, it’s against the law for anyone other than the learner driver to book, change or cancel a car driving test—including driving instructors and third‑party services.

3) Where you can move your test

New rules also restrict where you can move your test after booking: you can only move it to nearby test centres (for your current booking). The GOV.UK guidance explains how those nearest-centre options work in practice.

Quick takeaway for learner drivers and instructors

If you’re planning training, build in buffer time and aim to commit to a test date you realistically expect to be ready for. And for instructors: focus on helping your learner driver prepare for the test—your learner must handle the booking management steps.
