- Treherbert is a village at the head of the Rhondda Fawr valley in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, with a population of 5,727.
- Interestingly, the name commemorates the Herbert Earls of Pembroke, ancestors of the Marquess of Bute who developed the first coal pits in the Rhondda.
- In 1845 the Marquess of Bute bought a farm for £11,000 to sink the first steam coal pit, the Bute Merthyr Colliery, which struck coal in 1853.
- Notably, the first 38 wagons of coal from Treherbert travelled to Cardiff Docks on 21 December 1855 via the newly extended Taff Vale Railway.
- The A4061 Rhigos Mountain Road was built as a relief project for unemployed miners and opened in November 1929.
- What’s more, Treherbert RFC was founded by local colliers in 1879 and remains a member of the Welsh Rugby Union.
- Treherbert also produced one of Wales’ first rugby league teams, playing between 1908 and 1910.
- Finally, Treherbert railway station is the last stop on the Rhondda Line from Cardiff, with the line once continuing through a tunnel to the Afan Valley.
- Interestingly, Treherbert Band has been performing since around 1897, originally formed as a drum and fife band.
- Notably, Welsh professional darts player Wayne Warren, the 2020 BDO World Champion, comes from Treherbert.
