Tickhill – did you know?

  • Tickhill is a historic market town in the City of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, lying eight miles south of Doncaster near the Nottinghamshire border.
  • Interestingly, the name Tickhill means ‘Hill where young goats are kept’ or ‘Hill of man called Tica’, with Old English roots, and was first recorded in the 12th century.
  • Tickhill Castle, built by Norman magnate Roger de Busli, was held for Prince John against King Richard I in 1194 and survived a three-week siege in 1322.
  • Notably, the castle’s 11-sided keep on a 75-foot mound is one of only two in the world, modelled on Conisbrough Castle, and its Norman gatehouse dates from 1129–1130.
  • St Mary’s Church is a large 13th-century parish church, and Tickhill also features St Leonard’s Hospital and the Buttercross market cross from 1777.
  • What’s more, the Tickhill Psalter, a magnificent medieval illuminated manuscript made at Worksop Priory, is named after John de Tickhill, the 14th-century Prior of Worksop.
  • Tickhill was the second most important town in what is now South Yorkshire during the Middle Ages, sending two members to Parliament in 1295.
  • Finally, the town lies on the busy A631 and A60 junction adjacent to the A1(M) motorway, with the River Torne forming the county boundary with Nottinghamshire.
  • Interestingly, Tickhill Castle was ‘slighted’ (intentionally disabled) by Parliament in 1648 after royalist forces were defeated there during the Civil War.
  • Notably, a new public access wood called Jubilee Wood was planted in 2002 with 2,002 native trees on 4 acres of land next to the River Torne.
