- Shildon is known as the “Cradle of the Railways”. The world’s first steam-powered public railway began here in 1825.
- Interestingly, the first passenger train called Locomotion No.1 departed from outside the Mason’s Arms public house in Shildon.
- The town’s population exploded from just 115 people in 1821 to over 11,759 by the end of the 19th century. The railway drove this growth.
