Pelton – did you know?
- Pelton traces its origins to Saxon times, although the meaning of the name is disputed — it could mean “village with a palisade” or “village near the shovel-shaped hill”.
- Interestingly, in 1320 Pelton belonged to the Burdon family and passed through the Redhughs, Whelpingtons and Nevilles, whose lands were forfeited in 1569.
- Pelton Colliery, opened in 1835 in nearby Pelton Fell, brought rapid population growth — but a devastating explosion on 21 October 1866 killed 24 men and boys.
- Notably, West Pelton Colliery opened in 1858 and closed in 1921, while Pelton Colliery itself shut in 1965, ending the village’s deep coal mining era.
- Most of the village lies within the River Tyne catchment area, while the remainder falls within the River Wear catchment near the Cong Burn.
- What’s more, Thomas Hepburn (1795–1864), the famous coal miner and trade union leader who helped found the Union of Pitmen, was associated with the area.
- Pelton railway station served the village between 1860 and 1955 on the Stanhope and Tyne Railway; the nearest National Rail station today is Chester-le-Street.
- The village had a population of 8,250 at the 2011 census and is served by bus routes connecting to Stanley, Sunderland, Newcastle, Chester-le-Street and Consett.
- Interestingly, Alan White (1949–2022), the legendary drummer of the progressive rock band Yes, was born and grew up in the Pelton area.
- Notably, Pelton gained a newly built community centre in 2012 and today has a Co-op, a post office, a chemist, two parks, a library and a doctors’ surgery.
