Paulton – did you know?
- Paulton is a former coal mining village and the terminus of the Somerset Coal Canal at Paulton Basin, which carried coal that fuelled the entire Georgian development of Bath during the 19th century.
- Interestingly, Paulton was home to Polestar Purnells, a massive printing factory, and Ashman’s boot factory where ‘Voidax’ safety footwear — including motorcycle speedway boots — was manufactured. The Purnells site was replaced with 420 houses between 2009 and 2015.
- The area known as “The Batch” — a prominent coal spoil tip — remains a visible reminder of Paulton’s mining heritage on the Somerset Coalfield, where the deepest mine of its time at 1,800 feet was at nearby Timsbury.
- Notably, Paulton was the location of the very first Great Mills DIY store, and the company’s head office was originally located adjacent to the store on the site of the former Old Mills colliery baths. The site is now occupied by Wickes.
- Paulton has a small hospital (Paulton Memorial Hospital), a public swimming pool, a fire station, two pre-schools, an infant school, and a junior school, all serving the village and surrounding parishes.
- What’s more, the largest drydock on the entire UK canal system is located on the east side of Paulton Basin, a remarkable engineering feature that reflects the scale of the Somerset Coal Canal operation.
- Hill House, built around 1760 by John Hill, is a Grade II listed building that was later owned by Purnell’s printing company before being bought by the local doctor and refurbished in 1971.
- Finally, on 17 September 1944, 23 men were killed in a glider crash just outside Paulton when their aircraft went down en route from RAF Keevil to Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden. A war memorial commemorates the site.
- Interestingly, Paulton was once part of the hundred of Chewton, an ancient Saxon administrative division, and during the reign of Edward III the lord of the manor was Sir John de Palton, from whom the village’s name is thought to derive.
- Notably, Paulton Rovers F.C. is the village’s local football club and operates a members’ club, alongside Greyfield’s Sports and Social club, that serve as community hubs for the area.
